The Pavones region sits at the southern tip of Costa Rica's Pacific coast, where the Golfo Dulce funnels powerful SW swells into a stretch of coastline that has become legendary among surfers. From April through October, consistent groundswells deliver waves for every level, from mellow longboard points to heavy reef breaks. The water stays warm year-round, boardshorts are all you need, and on any given day there is a wave waiting.

The Main Event
Pavones Point
Known as the second-longest left-hand wave in the world, Pavones Point is the crown jewel of Southern Costa Rica. On a solid SW swell, the wave peels for over 1,000 meters along a cobblestone point, offering long walling sections with occasional barrel opportunities on the inside. The takeoff zone is fast and powerful, demanding confident paddling and solid wave knowledge. When it connects from the top of the point all the way through the boats, rides can last well over two minutes.

Something for Everyone
Pilon
Just south of the main Pavones point, Pilon is one of the most popular and accessible breaks in the area. The wave offers multiple sections that cater to all levels, from a mellow inside section known locally as Beginner's Bay to a faster, more powerful outside peak that challenges advanced surfers. Arrive at the right stage and you will find clean, peeling lefts that can last just as long as Pavones Point.

For the Family
Rancho Mar
Rancho Mar delivers perfect glassy peelers that are smaller and more forgiving than the fast walls of Pavones Point. The mellow left-hand wave breaks over sand and rock, making it an ideal spot for surfers looking to build confidence and progress their skills. Even on bigger swell days, the wave retains a playful shape that rewards smooth, flowing surfing rather than aggressive power moves. Great for longboarders and beginner surfers.

Power & Solitude
Punta Banco
Ten minutes south of Pavones, Punta Banco sits farther outside the mouth of the Golfo Dulce and catches more direct swell energy. The result is consistently bigger, more powerful surf than Pavones Point. Several beach breaks offer both lefts and rights, breaking over sand approximately 50 meters from shore. When Pavones is too small, Punta Banco is where to go.

The Boat Trip
Matapalo Point
Across the Golfo Dulce on the tip of the Osa Peninsula, Matapalo is a world-class right-hander reached by a 30-minute boat ride from Pavones. In a region dominated by lefts, Matapalo is a rare treat for regular footers. The wave breaks along a rocky point with power and consistency, facing almost due west to catch the full brunt of South Pacific swells. Scoring a good day here is one of the most rewarding day trips in all of Costa Rica.

Off the Beaten Path
Backwash
Tucked between Pan Dulce and Matapalo Point on the Osa Peninsula side, Backwash is a moody right-hander that breaks over a rocky reef. The wave varies in quality depending on the swell and can range from fun and playful to heavy and hollow. Access requires a 30 minute boat trip across the gulf. This is Pavones surfing at its most raw and remote. A spot that rewards those willing to go looking for it.

Beyond the Map
There are waves here that have no name yet
Beyond the well-known breaks, the coastline of Southern Costa Rica hides reef passes, river mouths, and rocky points that fire on the right combination of swell, tide, and wind. These are waves you will not find in any surf guide. Our local team knows when the conditions align, and for the adventurous, a boat ride or jungle hike can lead to sessions with nobody else in sight.
